http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Sasuke_uchihaSasuke used his Sharingan to enter Naruto's subconscious to meet the Nine-Tails itself, finally discovering the source of Naruto's strength. The Nine-Tails became impressed with Sasuke's growth and ability, but as it criticized that he was similar to Madara Uchiha, Sasuke coldly reacted by using his Sharingan to suppress the Nine-Tails back into its cage, to which it never thought that he was quite capable of that feat.
He entered Naruto's subconscious using his Sharingan and then made eye contact with the Kyuubi; he suppressed it. He didn't control it. Genjutsu, assuming this is a sort of branching from it, does not last very long. So, one would assume entering one's own subconscious and repeatedly applying the illusion would be required.
